Daryl Gurney denied the Melbourne crowd a fourth consecutive deciding leg in 4 matches as he beat Gary Anderson 10-8. The Northern Irishman has now beaten the 2-time world champion in their last 3 TV meetings dating back to the World Matchplay.
It was again a story of missed doubles, Anderson missing 9 in the first leg alone. Gurney trailed behind on 269 when Anderson missed his first set of 3, before claiming the leg on double 16. Gurney took the next before Anderson finally got on the board in leg 3, hitting double 2 at his 14th time of asking at a double in the match. Gurney then pressed on, taking a 4-1 lead, building in confidence with every leg he picked off.
Anderson did get back into the game, crucially staying in the match at the break at 4-3 down. It was at this point, he, like Wright in the first game changed equipment, and picked up his World Championship victory style of darts. He also picked up the pace, releasing darts before Gurney had even passed him on the oche, and it seemed to work for Anderson, recovering from 6-4 down to an 8-7 lead. He wouldn’t win another leg in the match though, Gurney finishing 75, 68 and double 16 in the final leg after Anderson had missed 5 darts to force a decider.
Gurney will meet Peter Wright in the semi-final tomorrow
