Both players will see a big opportunity with Michael van Gerwen
exiting the tournament on Saturday especially with them on the opposite side of the draw.
Wright edged out Jermaine Wattimena in a thrilling contest to begin proceedings. The highlight being ‘Snakebite’s 144 checkout to claim the win. He had to survive a mini comeback of sorts after going 3-1 up with Wattimena going close to a nine darter.
The Dutchman went seven into it before missing the T19 but hit double 16 for a 12 darter to ask the question. Despite that though and the close averages between the pair, Wright remained resilient and didn’t let his lead slip recording a 6-3 win in the end.
Lewis was even better as he smashed Joe Cullen 6-2 with a 110 average en route. ‘Jackpot’ has been getting back into some serious form as of late and this is another example.
He started off brilliantly smashing in a 167 checkout to double his lead but Cullen stuck with him to go 3-2 behind. A surge though from Lewis made this academic as he moved through to that quarter final with Wright reeling off three straight legs to do so.
