Michael van Gerwen has been nominated for the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year following his fantastic 2017 campaign and joins the likes of Roger Federer and Tom Brady in the list
The Dutchman follows Phil Taylor - who was runner-up in the 2010 BBC Sports Personality of the Year award - in being nominated in the annual awards is of course not up for the same award but it is still a big achievement for a darts player to get nominated
Van Gerwen began 2017 by winning his second World Championship title, and has also won the Masters, Premier League, World Cup of Darts, Shanghai Darts Masters, U.S. Darts Masters, European Championship, World Series of Darts Finals and Grand Slam of Darts titles and has scope to win the Players Championship finals and World Championship to finish the year
He has also become only the second player in history to achieve two nine-darters in one match, during a UK Open Qualifier in February.
