Michael van Gerwen's reign of dominance in Wigan is over - for now.

The world number one tore through the field in the first three UK Open qualifiers. Van Gerwen won the first two events, before losing a quarter-final to eventual winner Michael Smith in the third. The £22,000 picked up by Mighty Mike means he tops the UK Open Order of Merit. It was confirmed on Wednesday afternoon that van Gerwen would not be entering the final three events this weekend. He may be replaced at the top of the Order of Merit by Smith, or another participant. But even that is far from certain. And the Dutchman will definitely be in the top 32, allowing him to skip the early rounds in Minehead.
That news came before van Gerwen's 7-5 defeat to Peter Wright on week two of the Premier League in Cardiff. Snakebite will be among the players battling it out in Wigan. After missing the first three events, Gary Anderson will fight for his Minehead spot. Adrian Lewis avoided an immediate ban from the DRA following last weekend's controversy. Jackpot is expected to feature, as is Jose Antonio Justicia Perales. Rob Cross and Raymond van Barneveld are among those who will need good results this weekend to reach the UK Open. Fellow Premier League star Mensur Suljovic has not attempted to qualify.
