Michael van Gerwen misses out on Overseas Sports Personality of the Year award

Michael van Gerwen has missed out on the BBC Overseas Sports Personality of the Year Award. 'Mighty Mike' lost out to Roger Federer in the end who has won it for a 4th time and the first time in ten years after a good year for the Swiss tennis player.
He ended up winning the Australian Open and Wimbledon this year in a return to form for the tennis legend and even though Van Gerwen has won more this calendar year, Federer is very popular and was a shoe-in of sorts for this award.
It shows how far darts has come though with only Phil Taylor previously involved in the Sports Personality awards coming second back in 2010 and it also shows how well Van Gerwen has played this year.

- Maybe the supposed top players are burnt out from the endless travelling and tournaments, I just don't think they have the dedication or outright desire to win. I think they are more interested in the money and being popular, just keeping their rankings steady. The only thing that mattered to Phil Taylor was winning, not winning a few games to top up the money pot and seeking the fans attention. Maybe there is too many tournaments now and the enthusiasm is gone. This year especially has seen so many different winners and unexpected draws and line ups.richieburnettrocks14-11-2024
