Payne summed it up as not playing well but being happy with the eventual victory and he will now go on to face Dave Chisnall in the next round.
“Last year was a bad year for me and to come back and do all the efforts away from the limelight have really got me back up there into the Worlds and all the other tournaments throughout the year,” said Payne.
He added: “I didn’t play well up there but I’m happy with the win and you’ve got to dig deep sometimes and really grind out the wins.”
He will face Dave Chisnall in his next tie on Sunday afternoon and Payne said that the duo always have a good game so he is hoping for the same again.
“Me and Dave always have good games so hopefully we have a good one tomorrow (Sunday afternoon).”
