Ten of the 16 seeds made it through. But six European Darts Trophy dreams ended early in surprise fashion.
PDC world number two Peter Wright was the biggest casualty, while Simon Whitlock, Joe Cullen, Gerwyn Price, Ian White and Mervyn King also departed.
Still going strong, unsurprisingly, is Michael van Gerwen. The two-time European Darts Trophy champion's bid to make it a hat-trick started well, with a ton-plus average in victory over Vincent van der Voort. Stephen Bunting's likely to be a tough opponent, but the Bullet may be ineffectual unless Mighty Mike's game drops.
Matthew Edgar's playing at the peak of his powers right now. The Englishman is into his first
European Tour Sunday session after beating Jeffrey de Graaf and Joe Cullen. Next up for him is his biggest challenge yet, against Daryl Gurney. After that Steve Beaton will look to add Michael Smith to Kim Huybrechts and Gerwyn Price in the list of high-profile scalps in Göttingen.
Dave Chisnall has his own Highland fling in the fourth game; John Henderson stands between him and the last eight. Also looking for a quarter-final berth is German hero Martin Schindler. After a stunning 6-0 thrashing of Mervyn King, the Wall has Jelle Klaasen in his sights. Another giant-killer in Richard North takes to the stage next, looking to overcome Jonny Clayton.
New dad James Wade plays Darren Webster in the penultimate fixture, before world champion Rob Cross meets homegrown hero Max Hopp in front of a German crowd who won't have a problem picking a favourite.
