Cross found himself 5-2 up against Woodhouse, but lost four legs on the spin as he crashed out of the first round of a Players Championship for the first time since April last year. Two-time world champion Michael van Gerwen did survive his first round as he held off Ricky Evans 6-5 in a high quality encounter that saw 'MvG' hit finishes of 129, 170 and 143 at crucial times.
Scottish duo Peter Wright and Gary Anderson comfortably booked their places in the second round, while fellow Premier League star Gerwyn Price lost out to Mickey Mansell. Other seeds to tumble included Kim Huybrechts, Alan Norris and Mervyn King.
Elsewhere, Steve Beaton got the better of Mark Webster 6-3 in a battle between two Lakeside champions. Terry Jenkins and John Part rolled back the years with first round victories.
