Michael Smith and Peter Wright got their Perth Darts Masters campaigns off to a winning start with 6-2 victories at the HBF Stadium.
Smith faced Australian Adam Rowe in the opening game of the tournament, and fired in a 180 in the first leg as he immediately broke throw. Having failed to take out 60 in the opening leg, Rowe missed another dart at a double in leg three. He was punished by Smith who took out 65 in two darts for the double break and a comfortable 3-0 lead. After 'Bullyboy' had made it four on double eighteen, the local hit a maximum in leg five in the process of putting his first leg on the board. The pair proceeded to trade legs, before the world-number-nine finished off a below par 6-2 triumph in a bit of style with a 120-checkout.
Wright took on Rhys Mathewson, and was forced to work hard early on as the Australian got off to a strong start by taking the first leg with the throw. Mathewson then missed a dart at double sixteen in both the second and third leg, as 'Snakebite' capitalised on both occasions. The roles were reserved in the following leg as Wright missed the bull for a 161, and two further darts at double eight to lead 3-1. Mathewson levelled by hitting tops. The UK Open champion then took control of the match, however, as he won four legs on the bounce for a relatively comfortable 6-2 win in a match in which he averaged just over 100.
