Phil Taylor defeated home favourite Simon Whitlock to make his sixth final in an Australian world series event out of just 7 events. The 16-time world champ didn’t score as prolifically as we know he can, but finished with a 58% checkout percentage, and punished every mistake he could.
It was Whitlock who started brightest, leading 2-1. The Aussie had darts for a 3-1 lead, a deflection throwing for double 12 that dropped into the single 9 costing Whitlock a third dart at a double and Taylor stepped in to steal the leg. Taylor would then win the next 5 legs before Whitlock responded in leg 10, a double, double finish of 92 securing this one.
A comeback never materialised, Whitlock in similar fashion to Gurney struggling with the range of his first dart. The dejected Australian did pick up a 4th leg, but Taylor sealed victory in style in the next, finishing the match with a 144 out shot.
Taylor will now look to continue his dominance in Australia, and be the first name on the Melbourne World series trophy as he plays Peter Wright in the final.
