Phil Taylor called upon some of the old magic to hold off Daryl Gurney and reach the semi-finals of the German Darts Masters.
Grand Prix champion Daryl Gurney can take heart from a spirited performance against Taylor, who at one point held a 108.8 average with an 85 per cent success rate on doubles, but the 16-time champion was ruthless in a 10-7 in Düsseldorf.
A 100 average was enough in the end for Taylor, but the Power looked set to post something much higher as he roared into a 5-1 lead. Finishes of 116 and 76 punctuated a dazzling spell that reminded Gurney and the crowd that, though past the peak of his powers, Taylor still has the magic touch.
The Northern Irishman refused to bow to the pressure of chasing the game however, and gradually pegged Taylor back. From 7-3 down, Superchin rattled off three legs on the spin to reduce the deficit to a single leg. No player has more big-match experience than Taylor, and the Stoke thrower used the wealth of his wiles to keep Gurney at arm's length.
The most decorated player in World Series history sealed a semi-final tie with James Wade, who benefited from the withdrawal through injury of Michael van Gerwen, by taking the final three legs.
