Peter Wright kept his cool to win a tense deciding leg and defeat Mensur Suljovic 10-9 in a close German Darts Masters quarter-final.
The opening three legs went to plan for the Mendham thrower, as he broke the Suljovic throw to take a 3-0 lead. The amiable Austrian had started slowly, but claimed the fourth leg to kick off a run of six legs from seven.
A superb 121 checkout was the highlight of a streak of fine finishing from The Gentle. Suljovic has had the better of Wright on stage recently, winning comfortably in the Champions League and World Grand Prix, but faltered with the finish line in sight.
Wright, though, could not break the throw, allowing Suljovic to take a 9-6 advantage. The UK Open champion needed some inspiration, and manufactured some with a timely 11-darter to make it 9-7.
A ninth 180 of the game helped Wright narrow the gap to a single leg, and when Suljovic missed a match dart, the Scot pounced. Suljovic had come up trumps in a final leg decider with Kyle Anderson in the first round, but was unable to replicate the performance as Wright picked off the double to claim the win. Wright takes on Raymond van Barneveld in the semi-finals in Düsseldorf.
