Michael van Gerwen claimed the first European Tour title of 2019 with victory at the European Darts Open in Leverkusen by seeing off Rob Cross in the final.
Van Gerwen spoke afterwards and admitted that he had to work hard to win despite people thinking it was easy for him to claim the win. "Everyone always thinks I am a robot but I'm not a robot and today was one of the days where I had to work really hard to win," said Van Gerwen. Barring that he said he is pleased with his performance overall over the course of the tournament and he has now shunned any doubt of a loss in form. "Rob played so well in this tournament, I knew I had to perform well if I wanted to beat him and it was really tough for me. He was a bit unlucky at the end but I hit the big shots at the right moments so I'm happy with my performance." The triple world champion also caused a stir on Sunday by throwing a against Mensur Suljovic. "Mighty Mike" did this in a special way by finishing 147 via triple 19, bullseye and double 20.
