Van Gerwen survives spirited fightback from Huybrechts in first game since World Championship loss

Michael van Gerwen started his bid to win his fourth successive Masters crown with a 10-6 win over Kim Huybrechts. 'Mighty Mike' looked to be back to his brilliant best but did something that has been seen recently and that was switch off. He had darts to win 10-1 but Huybrechts fought back.
He won 5 legs on the spin including a brilliant 160 checkout and he really gave MVG a game in the second half of proceedings and took his chances when the former 2x World Champion almost went to sleep but it was too much of a mountain to climb for the Hurricane but he comes away with plenty of encouragement after a good performance.
Van Gerwen despite that lapse averaged 102.6 and hit 63% on the doubles and will play James Wade tomorrow in the Quarter-Finals at Stadium:MK.

- I dont like individuals or crowds trying to put any player off when they are trying to check out, how anyone can think its okay for the crowd to whistle or shout as someone is throwing for a double is beyond me but it does seem to have become part and parcel of the modern game. I no longer play now, darts is as good as dead at a local level round my way but when i did play many years ago, no matter how intense the rivalry you never shouted out or whistled when an opponent from the other team was throwing for a double.Mysstree17-11-2024

If you want to see crowd passion... watch a match when German and Dutch players face off... that can be just as bad if not worse for crowd noises.
