Whitehead - a World Trophy and Finder Darts Masters quarter-finalist - stormed to winning the first set as he pinned a timely 119 with his opponent, McGeeney, sat on 101 to send the set all the way. The Gillingham-based ace pulled off a stunning 13-darter to move one up in the second set, only for McGeeney to level up the set at one-a-piece with a 85 outshot.
The number one seed squandered darts at the outer ring in the fourth leg of the second set and they were punished by Whitehead - who moved 2-0 up, hitting double five for a 23-dart leg.
McGeeney - who suffered an agonising defeat in last year’s final at the hands of Glen Durrant - took a 1-0 lead in set three, but Whitehead reeled off three legs in succession, including two 12-darters and a 105 checkout to move one set away from third round at
Lakeside.
Whitehead wrapped up a convincing victory as he prevails to the quarter-finals of the World Championship, pinning a 14-dart leg in set four’s deciding leg to complete a 4-0 whitewashing of
BDO number one Mark McGeeney.
The Gillingham-based star will face either Scott Waites or Richard Veenstra in the last eight.
