Peter Wright overcame
Michael Smith in the first quarter final at the Melbourne Darts Masters. Tipped to go all the way by many, the match finished 10-9, Wright holding throw in the decider after squandering chances 2 legs before.
Smith started the brightest, taking the first 2 legs, and should have led 3-0. Three missed darts at double 16 and a bust the following visit allowing Wright to put himself on the board. Again wright struggled with his throw, even changing darts mid-leg at one point, only to switch back to his starting set a few visits later. Smith pushed on to open up a 4-2 lead, his highest finish of 82 securing the 6th leg as missed doubles continued to plague both players, but Wright in particular.
Then came the fightback from Wright, helping himself to the next 6 legs in a row to move 8-4 in front. It wasn’t pretty though, more scrappy finishing from both players contributing to neither averaging over 90. Smith responded to win 5 of the next 6, but was unable to take the deciding leg.
Wright will play the winner of Gary Anderson vs Daryl Gurney in the semi-finals.
