Simon Whitlock overcame James Wade to book his spot in the Melbourne world series semi-final. The Aussie came from 9-7 behind, winning the final 3 legs to beat Wade after he missed 2 match darts to win 10-8.
Neither led by more than 2 legs in the entire match, however if it wasn’t for some magical finishing from the wizard Wade could have changed that. Checkouts of 130, 128 and 108 helped the Aussie to 3 holds of throw at crucial moments.
Perhaps the most surprising stat of the game was James Wade failing to register a ton plus checkout, normally so efficient between 100-120. The Machine finished with a highest out shot of just 70, and will be kinking himself after missing 2 darts at his favourite double top to seal the match, albeit under pressure from a frosty crowd.
Whitlock threatened to seal the match with a nine-darter. For the second night in a row the Aussie number 1 threw 6 perfect darts in the final leg, however he went one dart better tonight, sealing the win in 11 darts. Whitlock will play the winner of Corey Cadby and Phil Taylor.
