Nathan Aspinall was hit by a particularly nasty surprise after his first-round win at the
World Grand Prix. The 35-year-old Englishman discovered on Tuesday morning that his black Audi had been broken into.
Aspinall had reason to celebrate in Leicester on Monday night. “The Asp” handled Kevin Doets in the tournament’s unique double-in, double-out format. The Dutchman forced a deciding set, but Aspinall ultimately edged it 2-1.
A day later the mood had flipped completely. When Aspinall returned to his car, the passenger-side window had been smashed. Footage he shared on social media showed shards of glass on the ground and on the seat.
It is not known whether anything was actually taken from Aspinall’s car. The Englishman stayed overnight in the East Midlands after his match.
Aspinall did not hide his anger at the damage. He posted a strong message alongside a photo of the wreckage: “Dirty f***ing scroats.”
The former UK Open and World Matchplay champion added with a touch of sarcasm: “All I need.”
It is
reported that this is not the first time players or staff have faced car break-ins during the World Grand Prix. At last year’s edition, also staged at the Mattioli Arena in Leicester, cars were reportedly broken into as well.
