“An 85 per cent chance of giving away £501,000” – Richard Osman crunches the numbers on Luke Littler’s Netflix challenge

Richard Osman believes the format of Netflix’s upcoming Beat Luke Littler challenge gives even the world number one a surprisingly slim chance of getting through the night without somebody taking the £501,000 prize.

Osman, who will serve as expert analyst for the live special alongside host Gary Lineker, has now offered a more detailed explanation of the numbers behind the concept. Twenty amateur players will each get one leg of 501 against Littler, with the jackpot on offer to anyone who beats him.

Speaking on The Rest Is Entertainment, Osman explained that the danger does not come from Littler suddenly being an underdog against any individual challenger, but from having to survive the same one-leg risk 20 times in succession.

“I had such a good chat about it yesterday because I'm interested in the numbers,” he said. “So, 20 amateurs come and play Luke Littler, and if you beat him over one leg of 501, you win £501,000. Obviously, he is the best player in the world. So people think, ‘Oh yeah, but how are you going to beat him?’ Well, firstly, the people they are going for are going to be good darts players. You can’t be a pro, but these are good players.”

In a normal televised match, Littler would expect his superior scoring and finishing to tell over time. A single leg offers nowhere near the same margin for recovery. One missed double, one 12 or 15-dart leg from an opponent, or one poorly timed visit can be enough to end it.

“We were looking at all the numbers and you think, like, in any given leg, Luke Littler has got an 85 per cent chance of beating a player at that standard,” Osman continued. “So, any given leg, of course, he is going to win. But 20 legs, I think he’s got a 15 per cent chance of winning all 20. Which means an 85 per cent chance of giving away £501,000 to an amateur darts player.”

Osman did not explain the precise model behind those percentages, and the two figures should not be treated as a simple direct calculation from one another. If each leg really carried an identical and independent 85 per cent Littler win probability, his chance of winning all 20 would actually be lower than 15 per cent.

His broader point, though, is clear: even a huge favourite in every individual leg becomes much more vulnerable when asked to repeat that result over and over again.

Beat Luke Littler will be broadcast live on Netflix on October 30, with regional heats in Manchester and London being used to determine the final field of 20 challengers.

Gary Lineker will host the programme, while Osman will serve as expert analyst, breaking down the numbers and real-time statistics during the live broadcast.

For Littler, the challenge comes in the middle of a dominant 2026 season in which he has won every PDC major staged so far and remained clear at the top of the Order of Merit.
