The semi-finals kicked off with
Mensur Suljovic facing Anderson in a repeat of the World Matchplay final. The first two legs went with throw, Suljovic and Anderson both finding tops to get on the scoreboard. “The Gentle” regained the lead with a 32 finish but his favourite double 14 failed him in the next leg, straying into the eleven as the Scotsman levelled.
Anderson broke throw in leg five with a 81 finish and consolidated that break with a nervy double 5. A classy 92 finish from the Austrian reduced the deficit to 4-3 going into the break.
“The Flying Scotsman” doubled his lead after the interval, starting with a 180 and finishing with a tidy 96 finish. The game’s second break followed, a double 18 gave Anderson the breathing space of a three-leg lead. Double 5 was the Scotsman’s friend once again as he found it to open up a four leg advantage. It was 180s galore in leg 11 as Anderson found two maximums to set up a 41 finish which he dispatched.
A 12 darter ending on double four edged the world number four even closer to victory. Suljovic stopped the rot with a double 10, ending Anderson’s run of five consecutive legs. The twice World Champion planted another double 18 to move a leg from victory at the second intermission. “Ando” controlled the last leg, he hit tops to end Suljovic’s reign as champion and progress to the final once again.
