Andy Baetens emerged Saturday as the winner of the qualifying tournament in Den Bosch for the World Darts Championship, in which darters from the Netherlands and Belgium were allowed to compete.
All amateur darters, plus the Dutch and Belgian players outside the top-64 of the world rankings were allowed to participate in this qualifier. The list of participants showed off the names of old acquaintances such as Jeffrey de Zwaan, Jan Dekker, Jelle Klaasen and Christian Kist, but they were all eliminated early.
It proved to be the day for Baetens, who failed to qualify for the World Darts Championship via the Pro Tour in the past two years. As a result, 'The Beast' seemed to have to go to Q-School to keep his Tour Card, but with this World Championship qualifier, he still has a chance to play his way into the top-64 of the world rankings.
The Belgian reached the final after victories over Loek van den Berg (6-1), Martijn Dragt (6-4), Marc Vleghert (6-2), Ron Meulenkamp (7-3) and the surprisingly strong playing Shane de Jong (7-2).
At the other end of the schedule, Jimmy van Schie made it to the final for the second consecutive year. Van Schie dealt with Alwin Kamphuis (6-2), Danny Lanooy (6-1), Alexander Merkx (6-5), Sietse Lap (6-3), Laurens Admiraal (7-3) and Vincent Kamphuis (7-6).
Last year Van Schie lost in the final to Stefan Bellmont, and again the Dutchman fell just short. Baetens managed to take a 4-1 lead in the early stages thanks to two 11-darters, but Van Schie fought back to 5-5.
Baetens then held his own leg for 6-5, after which Van Schie missed two chances to force a final leg. Baetens faced 33 and threw out this finish in two arrows to secure the World Cup ticket.
Baetens is the fifth Belgian dart player to qualify for the upcoming edition of the World Darts Championship at Alexandra Palace. Mike De Decker and Dimitri Van den Bergh qualified through the world rankings for the most important tournament of the season. Mario Vandenbogaerde and Kim Huybrechts forced their spot through the Pro Tour.
