Wessel Nijman and
Nathan Aspinall have secured their spot in the last 16 at the 2024
Swiss Darts Trophy in Basel this Saturday night.
Nijman, is the second Dutchman after Raymond van Barneveld to advance to the third round at the Swiss Darts Trophy. Nijman recorded a handsome 6-5 victory over former major-winner
Chris Dobey. Nijman managed to create a gap with his English opponent early in the match. He broke Dobey in the third leg with a 57 finish and then ran away with a 17-darter and a 13-darter to take a 4-1 lead.
However, Dobey narrowed the gap to 3-4 with a 14-darter and a 13-darter. Nijman had two chances in the eighth leg to make it 5-3, but missed the chance at double. Dobey punished these misses by throwing out 104 to level up at the 4-4.
Dobey then took over the lead via double 10, before Nijman forced a last leg-decider with a 14-darter. Dobey got to start the final leg, but Nijman raced over Dobey with two 180 scores. With an 11-darter, Nijman secured the win, giving him the chance to face James Wade in the last sixteen.
Elsewhere, Nathan Aspinall provided the quick elimination of
Dave Chisnall, the number one seed at this tournament. Thanks to an average of 101, 'The Asp' was 6-3 too strong for Chisnall.
