In a battle between two of North America's premiere darters, it was the American, Danny Baggish who ran out a 3-0 winner over Canada's Matt Campbell. The win not only sees Baggish progress at this year's World Darts Championship but also keeps alive his hopes of retaining his PDC tour card.
After the biggest win of the Gambler's career to date, a 3-1 victory over Adrian Lewis at the 2021 World Championship, many expected Baggish to kick on to another level. Sadly for the American, this hasn't quite been the case and 2 years later he finds himself fighting for his darting life. Once again on the Ally Pally stage he comes alive however, "I just love performing in front of a crowd," he explains. "I like putting up good numbers, putting up big checkouts and celebrating with them. I'm a showman, win or lose I'm always going to have fun."
With his poor form in 2021 seeing him miss out on a spot at the Ally Pally this time last year, Baggish was delighted to be back on the biggest stage in world darts. "Last year I told myself while I was sitting at home, watching this tournament that I was going to make sure I was going to be here this year," he said. "It's the Mecca of darts so it hurt (not qualifying)."
With the 27th seed Mervyn King awaiting in Round 2, Baggish was full of praise for one of darts most experienced players. "He's a legend in my eyes," Baggish said. "But if I play my game there's no reason why I can't repeat what I did a couple years ago and continue on."
