Callan Rydz has confirmed that his grandfather has sadly passed away after his epic
PDC World Darts Championship win over Daryl Gurney, one that provided drama but also emotion as the Bedlington ace was emotional during his press conference.
Rydz managed to secure a
3-2 win overcoming a 2-1 deficit to defeat the World No.22 and advance to the Last 32 in North London. But 'The Riot' who has often gone through personal problems over the past few years was emotional and cut his interview on Sky short praising Gurney for his love and support amid his own personal turmoil.
"Daryl has been one of the only lads who knows what has been going on back home with my grandad," Rydz said. "Every other day he has been messaging me, asking if he is OK. I'm getting emotional thinking about it..."
Struggling back home
After taking some time to gather his thoughts, he said that he wished he was at home and that it's hard to concentrate when not only has he been ill but also had personal issues. "I wear my heart on my sleeve. I'm struggling. It's hard when you have stuff going on back home. I came here to try and forget about it. It's hard. I play for my family. I've got a job to do and thankfully I got through. I have too much stuff going on back home. I hear the crowd sing my name and I smile. But I wish I was home.
"We are preparing for this to be the last Christmas. I haven't practised either. I've been ill. Had that flu that has gone around. I was in bed for two days. I will go home now, see how the big man is. Listen once he goes, I will probably consider packing in. Probably. But I don't know. I have a decision if I want to keep doing it.
He also spoke about going to the pub on Christmas with his grandad if he was ok and going out on his mobility scooter in Bedlington but unfortunately for Rydz, he is unable to as he confirmed that he had passed on Tuesday afternoon. "There's not enough words to say. RIP Grandad," he wrote on
Instagram."I'll promise to try and make you and grandma proud up there. I love you."
He faces Josh Rock on Monday night in the third round after 'Rocky' saw off Joe Comito 3-0 to advance to post Christmas. It is bound to be an emotional one for Rydz once again but he will hope to make his grandfather proud no doubt. Condolences to Callan and his family.
