Cameron Menzies seemed to have messed up Monday night at the 2024 Grand Slam of Darts, but as it turned out, "Cammy" had done just enough after all and will advance to the last sixteen in Wolverhampton.
After a 5-2 victory over Martin Schindler and a narrow 5-4 defeat against Danny Noppert, Menzies needed a win over Beau Greaves to guarantee qualification for the knockout stages of the Grand Slam of Darts for the first time in his career. Even if he lost, the more legs Menzies would win, the better his starting position would be with the match between Schindler and Noppert still to come. However, the Scot lost 5-1 to Greaves. The 20-year-old Englishwoman needed to have won 5-0 herself to have any chance of making the last 16.
So it was down to Schindler and Menzies. 'The Wall' needed to take three legs against Noppert to go through to the next round together with the Dutchman. However, Schindler missed two break chances in the fifth leg and then fell behind 4-2. In the seventh leg, Schindler missed two more darts on the outer ring to take that third leg. Those misses proved fatal, as Noppert then put a 5-2 final score on the scoreboard.
As a result, Noppert became group winner in Group B, while Menzies seized second place. 'Cammy' had a special way of thanking 'The Freeze' later in the evening. On his socials, Menzies changed his profile pictures to a picture of the former UK Open champion Noppert. ''Don't deserve anything more. Very lucky. I owe Danny,'' Menzies additionally wrote on X (formerly Twitter).
