Thursday night starts the World Darts Championship for Danny Noppert with a clash against Scott Williams. It will be his first tournament for "The Freeze" since the Grand Slam of Darts.
The Dutchman skipped the Players Championship Finals because his girlfriend was about to give birth. Mandy gave birth to their daughter at the end of November, after the couple previously gave birth to son Jent in February 2022.
A month later, Noppert then won his first major at the 2022 UK Open. Whether a similar performance is in the cards again at the World Darts Championship? ''It would be something ...,'' he said with a wink in an interview with De Telegraaf.
After the birth of his second child, Noppert found himself in the familiar baby bubble. ''In the beginning you have some sleepless nights, which is normal, because of course she doesn't have a rhythm yet,'' Noppert explained. ''But that all goes well. In the afternoons I was sitting comfortably with the baby on my arm, when the little guy is in bed for a while and mom is refueling."
However, Noppert does not expect to arrive at the start of the World Darts Championships exhausted. ''That athletes sometimes say they feel like 'flying' after the birth of their child, I can totally understand,'' Noppert states. ''It does give a boost of course. It's the greatest thing there is, especially if they do well.''
Should Noppert do very well at the World Darts Championship, a clash with compatriot Michael van Gerwen may be waiting in the quarterfinals. ''Oof, that would be great,'' Noppert said enthusiastically. ''I would really love to celebrate my birthday in England, with my best performance ever at the World Championship. I would sign for us to play against each other, then we have a Dutchman in the semifinals anyway. But so far at the World Championship it hasn't been that way for me. I never got further than the third round. I am now seventh and to really get to the top, I have to shine,'' said Noppert.
