The CDC season is only just over halfway through in terms of number of tournaments, but the battle for World Championship spots seems almost over. After ten of the sixteen tournaments, there is already a pretty good indication of who will qualify for the World Darts Championship.
This season, five World Championship tickets will be distributed through the CDC circuit. Not only will the winners of the CDC Continental Cup and the CDC Cross-Border Challenge be allowed to compete at Alexandra Palace, but three starting spots will also be given away through the CDC Pro Tour Order of Merit.
The CDC season this year consists of 16 Pro Tour tournaments, with the best American and best Canadian getting to go to the World Cup, as well as the next highest ranked player on the rankings.
Ten of the sixteen tournaments have now been played, and Adam Sevada has already built a substantial lead. The American made it to five finals, no fewer than four of which he won. This puts him at the top of the rankings with 118 points. Stowe Buntz, also an American, follows close behind in second place with 97 points.
We won't find the first Canadian until third place. That is held by David Cameron with 71 points. So the Canadian darter has to look mainly to compatriots in the rankings and he does not seem to have much to fear from them. Darryl Christie (ninth with 42 points), Jim Long (11th with 36 points) and Kiley Edmunds (12th with 34 points), are far behind Cameron.
Sevada and Cameron are thus well on their way to qualifying for the PDC World Darts Championship, while Buntz is also well placed to be the next highest-ranked player to force a World Championship spot. Buntz has a 32-point lead over number four Leonard Gates, who, however, already has a World Championship spot in his pocket because Gates won the CDC Continental Cup. So Buntz's next competitor is his compatriot Doug Boehm, who is in fifth place with 55 points.
The CDC circuit continues on the weekend of Aug. 22-24 with the next three tournaments in Oakbrook Terrace, in the U.S. state of Illinois. The final three tournaments of the year will take place Sept. 19-21 in Brownsburg, located in the state of Indiana.
