Joe Cullen produced the best display of the day so far at the
Austrian Darts Open convincingly defeated Nick Kenny to qualify for the Last 16.
'The Rockstar' trailed 1-2 in the early stages, but then jumped out into a 5-2 lead with two 13-darters.
Cullen then finished the job with another 13-darter, which also raised his average to 102.81.
As
Jonny Clayton survived a tough test seeing off Jelle Klaasen 6-5 to also move through. A 12-darter in the second leg gave Klaasen a break lead, but Clayton immediately snatched that break back with a 13-darter on the Dutchman's throw.
Only in seventh leg there was another break opportunity after that, but Clayton did not take his opportunity on the bullseye. Klaasen then hit the double 10 with his last dart to make it 4-3.
The next three legs also went with the darts, leading to a deciding leg. With three innings without a treble, Klaasen got off to a poor start in the last leg, while Clayton started with a 140 and then recorded two more throws with a treble. Klaasen then came up with another 140 score, but it came too late. Clayton won the match with an 18-darter.
Nathan Aspinall did not have to put in excessive effort to deal with Hannes Schnier, who survived six matchdarts against Jeffrey de Zwaan on Friday. An average of 84 was enough for Aspinall to win 6-2. Schnier, incidentally, threw just a 73 average.
