Jonny Clayton has claimed his third title of 2021 on Day Three of PDC Super Series II with an 8-5 victory over James Wade in the final of Players Championship 7.
Clayton was in supreme form during the opening Super Series reaching 3/4 finals and despite not being as clinical has firmly established himself as one of the best players in the world currently.
This comes after his Masters triumph also to start the year which gave him his Premier League spot and he now has another ProTour title to add to his brilliant start to the year.
To begin the tie, Clayton was superb opening up a 2-0 lead after Wade missed a dart at double 20 in leg two.
Wade halved the deficit from there but Clayton moved 4-1 ahead with a break and took out 116 to cement that break at 5-1.
Wade stopped the rot on double 15 to reduce the deficit to 5-2 and he was soon 5-4 behind with a break.
Clayton put himself back towards the finishing line with a 72 checkout though to head into a 6-4 lead.
Wade fired back with a 180 and double four albeit being just a hold of throw to go 6-5 down.
The legs were running out but a 60 to leave 124 for Clayton allowed Wade the opportunity to pressure but he couldn't pin 137.
He was punished with a 25 checkout on double eight to go one away. On the Wade throw, he hit 137 to leave 24 with Wade needing 146 which he couldn't pin.
This allowed 'The Ferret' three at double 12 and he only needed one to claim the title.
