Dirk van Duijvenbode regained his confidence last weekend. 'Aubergenius' posted a handsome result by winning the Mannheim Darts Gala, after managing to beat three (former) world champions.
Van Duijvenbode was one of six top darters who had received an invitation to the demonstration tournament in Germany. The event was organized by PDC Europe, which is also responsible for organizing the thirteen Euro Tour tournaments
on the PDC calendar.
The tournament consisted of two groups of three players each. Van Duijvenbode was in a group together with former world champion Michael Smith and Martin Schindler. The Dutchman managed to win both matches, while Schindler was also too strong for Smith.
The other group was filled with Devon Petersen, Luke Humphries and Gerwyn Price. These three players all managed to win one pot, but it was Humphries and Price who advanced to the semifinals on leg difference.
Humphries then qualified first for the final with a 4-1 win over Schindler. Van Duijvenbode was next before eliminating Price (4-1). Van Duijvenbode then claimed the title in Mannheim by defeating reigning world champion Humphries 4-2.
In the coming months, PDC Europe
will organize even more darts galas at which some of the world's top players will make an appearance. Events are still scheduled in the German cities of Saarbrücken, Passau, Trier, Göttingen, Halle, Lingen and Köln.
