Steve West crowned himself the winner of the weekly title at the MODUS Super Series on Saturday night. The 49-year-old proved too strong for Richie Howson in the final of the 11th week of play.
A new competition is played each week in the MODUS Super Series. The best six players from the first five days of play met Saturday divided into two pools during the final day of the eighth week of play. In the thirteenth week of play, the 12 weekly winners will take on each other.
The top six players from Monday through Friday's pool matches were allowed to compete in Saturday's final day, which consisted of two groups. In Group A, Howson managed to win both matches by defeating Wayne Jones (4-3) and Barry Copeland (4-1). Copeland won the encounter against Jones 4-3 and went through as number two in the pool.
In Group B, all players managed to win once. Kurt Parry defeated Krzysztof Kciuk (4-2), but then lost 4-0 to West. The latter in turn went down 4-3 to Kciuk. West had the best leg balance of the trio, while Kciuk was runner-up to the semifinals.
In the first semifinal, Howson eliminated Kciuk (4-3). West then became the second finalist by defeating Copeland 4-2. So in the final, Howson and West faced each other. West then managed to claim the title and the top prize of 5,000 pounds by defeating Howson 4-1.
West shed tears after the final. The 10-time World Championship participant has had a tumultuous time of it. He recently made his return to the darts circuit after hip surgery, while some fun things had also happened. West had recently married his girlfriend.
