Former World Championship participant and commentator Tomas 'Shorty' Seyler passes away at the age of 49

A well-known face in German Darts in former player and commentator Tomas Shorty Seyler passed away at the age of 49. This was announced on the official Instagram page of his company "Shorty Merch".

"After his health collapsed on June 29 of this year, he could no longer be helped, even with the most intensive efforts of the doctors. His death shocks us deeply and leaves a huge gap, also in our joint company Shorty Merch," wrote his friend and business partner Sebastian Hielscher on Instagram;

Seyler was considered one of the most influential German darts personalities, as he was the first German participant in the PDC World Darts Championship in 2006 alongside Andree Welge. In addition to numerous national and international successes as a player, Seyler was particularly popular for his work as a co-commentator on Sport 1 and DAZN.

He suddenly left DAZN though back in 2021 after initially forming a partnership which was beloved by German darts fans with Elmar Paulke with no reason given as to his departure.

He played four times at the World Darts Championship over the course of his career in 2006, 2017, 2010 and 2014. Concern first started on Tuesday with N&M Dart Events and More on Facebook posting a statement confirming that he was in hospital.

"Dear darts friends, yes, it's true. Tomas 'Shorty' Seyler is in hospital and I don't know where he's going. His family, his friends and I ask for consideration and respect in this difficult time. Wiebke," is the sad news, accompanied by a crying smiley.

As well as this, they posted a further statement from his fiance and family confirming the bad news on Friday.

"Tomas "Shorty" Seyler's journey on this earth has come to an end. He passed away peacefully yesterday. His family, friends and we mourn a great man, son, brother, dad, grandpa and fiance. Shorty has always met life with humor and charm and has inspired us all with his passion for darts. Please be understanding that the funeral will be held within the immediate family circle. We know a lot of people want to say goodbye to Shorty and are giving everyone the opportunity to do so at a memorial day. Place & time will be announced soon.," they wrote.
