At first glance, the worlds of darts and hardstyle seem miles apart. Yet they came together in surprising fashion this weekend at the REBiRTH Festival in Haaren. None other than Michael van Gerwen, three-time world champion and one of the biggest names in darts, showed a completely different side of himself there. Not with darts in hand, but with a microphone.

The Brabant native from Vlijmen, better known as “Mighty Mike,” is usually seen on the biggest darts stages in the world, where he dominates opponents with his scoring power and relentless focus. But this time he suddenly found himself in a completely different setting: a festival tent full of dancing revelers, where the beats are typically louder than the cheers in a darts arena.

“A little dancing”

The special moment arose when Van Gerwen got in touch with singer Mart Hoogkamer, who was performing at the festival at the time. Hoogkamer, approached the darter outside the tent and explained a plan. In footage that later appeared on social media, the singer can be seen enthusiastically talking about the stage.
“We’re about to get the people here dancing a little,” Hoogkamer says with a broad smile. Then comes the surprising invitation: to go on stage together. Van Gerwen looks visibly startled but keeps his composure. When Hoogkamer explains that they will perform the song “Ik ga zwemmen” or A little dancing in English together as the closer, the deal is quickly sealed with a high five.
What follows is a moment you wouldn’t expect from a top athlete of this caliber. At the end of Hoogkamer’s set, Van Gerwen suddenly appears by the stage. To the crowd’s great surprise, he climbs over the barriers and joins the performers. Hoogkamer introduces him in grand fashion as “one of the best darters in the world,” after which the audience erupts.
With evident delight, Van Gerwen grabs the microphone and starts singing along to the well-known track. Although he is of course not a professional singer, he radiates enthusiasm and confidence.

Bullseye

Hoogkamer can barely contain his joy and stands on stage with a wide grin. At one point he even puts a hand over his mouth, as if he can hardly believe what’s happening himself. The spontaneous duet between singer and darter proves to be a bullseye.
For Van Gerwen, this performance is a rare venture outside his familiar sporting environment. It shows that elite athletes also have another side and sometimes enjoy immersing themselves in completely different worlds. At the same time, it underlines his popularity: even beyond darts, he is recognized and warmly received.
The moment quickly spread on social media, where fans reacted with surprise and positivity to the singing ability—and above all the nerve—of the Dutch darter. For many, it was a unique chance to see Van Gerwen outside competition, simply as someone visibly enjoying a festive moment.

Whether we’ll see Van Gerwen with a microphone more often in the future remains to be seen. But one thing is certain: his appearance at REBiRTH will be talked about for a long time among those there.
