Gerwyn Price joins Luke Littler with elusive milestone before World Matchplay final showdown

While not getting the headlines of a nine-darter, the next best thing darts players can get is a 10-darter. Only eight have been produced in this year's World Matchplay with Gerwyn Price joining Luke Littler and Niels Zonneveld in producing two legs that had finished with 10 darts.

'The Iceman' upped the gears in last night's semi-final against Gian van Veen, storming away from his Dutch opponent to win 17-10 and seal a spot in the final, where the reigning champion Littler is in formidable form and will be very tough to beat.

Price will need to add a few four-visit turns at the oche to have a chance against the world number one. While players would prefer to go out in 10 darts over 12, there is no difference in terms of it being done with four turns at the board.

However, a 10-darter will do wonders for the average and are eye-catching at the best of times, especially in a tournament like to Matchplay. A battering of the trebles followed by clinical finishing showcases the best attributes of a darts player and is not a common feat.

Only eight have been produced in this year's event in Blackpool. The first two came by debutant Zonneveld who settled quickly on the Winter Gardens stage. These came in back-to-back legs in an incredible period for 'Triple Z.' However, it would not be enough to see off a resurging Stephen Bunting who ended up winning 13-12 in a thriller.

Also in round one, Littler got the first of two 10-darters so far in this tournament with potential of more in the upcoming final. He joined Ross Smith and Gary Anderson in going out in 10 as all three moved into the next round.

The two-time world champion immediately went one better. In the first leg of his second round clash against Nathan Aspinall, Littler pinned perfection as he sent the crowd crazy with a thrilling nine-darter. He backed it up later with a 10-darter later in the tie. Surprisingly, despite averaging over 109 in all four matches, the 19-year-old has not added to that total.

The most recent two have come from an improving Price. The Welshman started this tournament slowly but is finally producing some of his best stuff. His two best legs have come in the form of 10-darters against Smith and van Veen.

Going out in 10-darts on throw means that the other player has to find a nine-darter to win the leg. Against the throw, you need to match it. These types of legs are rare, even at the pinnacle of the sport, but can prove to be crucial if produced at pivotal times. There is a likely chance that more legs of this calibre in the showpiece event at the World Matchplay will crop up.
