Dave Chisnall has lashed out firmly at a darts fan who accused him of being drunk during a recent tournament appearance. The world number 10 had a difficult time in recent weeks, but parried the criticism in his own sarcastic way.
At Players Championship 11 in Leicester, Chisnall lost to Ryan Meikle in the second round after going down 6-5 to Micky Mansell the day before. That brought the number of defeats to five in his last seven matches.
On social media, some fans expressed criticism of the multiple major-finalist's dip in form. One user on X (formerly Twitter), under the name DCDritsch90, went way over the top in doing so. “I can shoot better darts than Dave Chisnall in his current form and I’ve never played a day in my life. Imagine being a pro dart player and throwing a total score between 20 and 50 multiple times in a single match. Is he drunk?" he wrote.
Chisnall responded wittily with: “Gonna start shooting darts instead of chucking them and see if I end up doing any better.” Despite the criticism, Chisnall remains calm. He previously revealed that he is currently experimenting with his technique to get his game back to the desired level. “It’s hard to explain, but the first dart is going too high, and I have to switch," he said last month.
“I’ve tried messing around with my throw, but it doesn’t work. The weird thing is, I end up seeing the bottom of my flight when I hold the dart. It catches the corner of my eye and I end up losing concentration.
The former world championship semifinalist knows what he has to do. “Only I know how to throw my darts and I will just have to work on and find a way of fixing.
“I do think my game is in good nick, especially when the first dart goes into Treble 20, it’s just getting that more regular and hitting doubles more often when it matters”
