Daryl Gurney sealed a hard fought 10-7 win over Gary Anderson to reach the second round of the World Matchplay and he admits it should have been easier than it was in the end.
"I think I gave him definitely two or three legs but it does show you that whenever you haven't won here in a couple of years, a bit of pressure what it does. I wasn't really thinking about the finishing line but I just wanted to win the game and get it over and done with and that was it," he said post match.
On receiving some stick from the crowd, Gurney said he is used to it especially when facing a player like Anderson. "If I play a Scottish player, it feels like they've moved the Winter Gardens so that didn't bother me. It wasn't new to me. The crowd were only getting involved whenever he was coming back at me and I let him so it was my own fault."
His response was a sublime no look 180 which he admitted he had to get out of his system. "I was practicing last night and everything I hit, I didn't look at the doubles. It was just one of them things I had to get out of my system. It came out of nowhere and it worked out."
With Anderson defending big ranking money, it could be the final time he plays at the Winter Gardens, but this is something that Gurney played down. "Unless Gary decides to retire after the Worlds, maybe it's going to be his last year but for me, Gary Anderson is still too good. If he plays next year, he's going to qualify and I wouldn't like to be the person to play against him. He always gives the PDC a headache when it comes to the World's but if he decides to retire, that's the only way I think we won't see him at the Winter Gardens next year."
