"He is or maybe will be the best German dart player": Michael van Gerwen heaps high praise on Niko Springer after silencing home crowd

Michael van Gerwen had it tough as he surged past Niko Springer 6-5 in a decider as he heralded the German as the future of the nation in front of his home crowd at the European Darts Trophy in Gottingen.
Springer surged into a 3-0 lead and went one away but was broken allowing MVG the chance to force a decider. One which MVG used his experience and determination to get through superbly. He moves into the final day after not suffering the same fate as last time in Wieze.

"We all know how good Niko Springer is. I had to really dig deep in this game, I had to fight really hard. Early doors I made a few mistakes and then you're making it really tough but if I can always put myself in this position, I had to fight I had to battle. That gives myself energy. I think there's a lot more in the tank, I feel good I feel confident," said Van Gerwen post match.
"In my opinion, I think he is or maybe will be the best German dart player. You need to be aware of that because I think he's a great dart player."
"I lost to him in the ProTour last week, I didn't feel well but still he beat me so I had to take some revenge somehow. To do that in front of his home crowd is always nice."
The irony is that Van Gerwen is technically the defending champion at the Lokhalle having won the title seven years ago as he joked he's the guvnor. He also said that Germany almost feels like home given how much he is there.
"So I'm the guvnor in the building. I'm the guvnor. We did a few galas here as well. It's always such a lovely crowd. To play on this stage here even if it's four or five hours drive from home, it feels like with me coming to Germany so much it feels normal to me. I really appreciate this game."
