Marvin van Velzen captured a PDC Tour Card for the first time in his career early this year. Vincent van der Voort got talking to the 24-year-old Dutchman at the Players Championship in Hildesheim and talked about it in the podcast 'Darts Draait Door'.
Van der Voort was in Hildesheim last Sunday and Monday, where he went to take a look at the Challenge Tour (Sunday) and the Players Championship (Monday). At the seventh Players Championship of the year, he saw Van Velzen beat former world champion Michael Smith 6-0 in the first round. After also winning against Jose de Sousa, he eventually lost to eventual winner Gary Anderson in the last 32.
"I sat and talked to him for a while, really a top guy," Van der Voort said. "I also like the way he is in it. He's not there to learn, but wants to perform right away. He doesn't even set the bar very high for himself, but he comes to compete. He does that well."

With "The Cube," Van Velzen has a very special nickname, given to him by his little brother. "I told him to put that on his shirt and his flights and I don't know what," Van der Voort laughs. "He wasn't too keen on that. He's really never going to get rid of that nickname."
Another thing Van der Voort noticed about Van Velzen was the fact that he walked around in his "sneakers" during the floor tournament. "He had two different black shoes with him," Van der Voort chuckled. "The Cube s not very good at packing suitcases, either."
By the way, yesterday at Players Championship 8 in Hildesheim did not end well for Van Velzen, he had to sit down immediately after a 6-3 defeat in the opening round against Carl Sneyd.
