“I don’t understand why I’m playing so badly” – Dave Chisnall's search for answers continue following latest performance

Dave Chisnall is going through a difficult spell at the oche. The Englishman was knocked out in the first round of both Players Championship events this week and is struggling particularly with his doubles. Even so, the experienced player refuses to give up. In his column for Kwiff, ‘Chizzy’ reflected on his disappointing results and discussed his ambitions for the rest of November.

Chisnall lost 6-3 to Jurjen van der Velde on Wednesday, then went down 6-4 to Mensur Suljovic a day later. The manner of those defeats was particularly frustrating for the Englishman. He felt his preparation had not been the problem.
“It’s been a poor couple of days chucking, and even more frustrating than usual given the fact I prepared properly. My practice has been good, and I’ve been in good nick with the body and the sleep, so it’s a bit of a puzzler why I’ve thrown so poorly,” Chisnall said.

Finishing proved a major problem once again. Chisnall squandered numerous chances against Van der Velde. “I missed the bullseye for a 167 finish and then I think I missed something like 18 darts at a double. When they start going inside, you start really overthinking it, especially on the odd numbers, and it’s a case of just not being in the right headspace.”
Things barely improved against Suljovic the following day. Chisnall also felt the difference in pace between the two players had played a part. “It was the same again the next day against Mensur, who probably isn’t the best stylistic fit for me given how fast I chuck.”

Despite his disappointing results, Chisnall is convinced he can return to his best. The Englishman stressed that he has no intention of calling time on his career any time soon.

“There’s plenty of life in me yet, though. I’m not finished by a long way. A lot of darts is being able to lose well and take it on the chin. I’ve been at it a long time now, and you’ve got to keep perspective. Other players have suffered drops in form and found a way to come back. I’ve just got to keep at it."

Chisnall hoping for a turnaround at the Players Championship Finals

Chisnall still sees plenty of opportunities to end November on a positive note. Although his Pro Tour results have been disappointing, he is looking forward to the Players Championship Finals, where he will face Gabriel Clemens in the first round.
“November could still be a good month, with the Players Championship Finals coming up. I’ve been drawn against Gabriel Clemens, which looks like a good draw for me on paper, but he’ll probably say the same about playing me. So let’s see.”
