Michael van Gerwen failed to win the
World Series of Darts Finals for the sixth time in his career. 'Mighty Mike' was a size too small for Luke Littler in the semifinals and went down 11-4.
Van Gerwen, however, had made an excellent start to the day. In a buzzing AFAS Live, Van Gerwen and Luke Humphries presented the Amsterdam audience with a real thriller. For a long time it was very exciting who would walk away with the victory, but in the end it was the Dutchman who, to the delight of his home crowd, won 10-9 against the reigning world champion.
But that turned out to be just a warm-up. Van Gerwen was clearly not on the easiest side of the schedule and faced Littler, who had won 10-7 over Chris Dobey in his quarterfinals, in the semifinals. Van Gerwen didn't even play badly (99.20 average), but Littler topped that with nearly 108 average and won fairly easily 11-4.
"Whether there was no spark against him? I don't even want to say that yet," Van Gerwen told Viaplay. "However, I started the match well and put him under pressure from the start, at that point I was in the match very well. But then I come out of that break badly, I still win the first leg, but then I completely lose and report. That's where I seriously shortchanged myself."

Irritation
"He then started playing better and better and with that my the irritation increased," Van Gerwen continued. "I can blame myself for that."
"There is a very busy period coming up now and if I want to perform something there, this should not happen to me. I have to take this defeat on my chin already," Van Gerwen concluded.
