Luke Littler is without a doubt the man to beat this Premier League season. The young Englishman, who made his spectacular debut in 2024 by winning the playoffs, leads the league table after nine weeks of play with supremacy. With 26 points, he is no less than six points ahead of his nearest rival Luke Humphries and the hunger for more is far from satisfied.
The 17-year-old sensation already has four evening victories to his name: in Glasgow, Brighton, Cardiff and most recently in Newcastle. Moreover, in Cardiff he threw a unique nine-darter - the first ever on television to finish with double 15, and has now broken the limit of 100 maximum scores (180s) in one Premier League season.
But now Littler sets his sights on yet another achievement of stature: if he wins the evening again Thursday night in Manchester, he will become the first player ever with five evening wins in one Premier League season. That would break his own (shared) record from 2024 (four wins) and that while there are still six regular playing weeks and the final night on the schedule. So it seems only a matter of time before Littler will break the record.
"I'm obviously looking to try and go back-to-back in Manchester, but for myself, try and get that fifth nightly win, break the record," said Littler to Sky Sports.
"I know there's loads of weeks to go, but I want to try and get it done as quick as possible. I just want to try and just keep that six-point gap or even try and extend on it to number two in the table.
Although 26 points was often enough to make the playoffs in the past, Littler is anything but satisfied with "enough. He is out for dominance. "I think the past however many years, the format's been this one now, I think 26 has got you in to Finals Night," he added. But the position I'm in, for myself I want the number one, I want to break the nightly win record. So at the minute I'm still motivated to try and obviously get the win and try and keep top spot.
"It's a personal milestone but it'll also go down in the Premier League history for night wins. Obviously I had the 180 start as well, that's been huge for the start of this year and my power scoring's good."
But that fifth win won't come naturally. In the quarterfinals Thursday night, Littler meets none other than Gerwyn Price, an opponent the young world champion has already defeated six times in a row, including their previous encounters this Premier League season.
The Welshman seems to know exactly how to handle Littler, but the Englishman remains level-headed and calm under the pressure.
"I wouldn't say I'm motivated to obviously beat him, obviously I want to try and beat him, but I won't go on stage saying to myself 'you need to win this, you need to win this,'" he added.
"I'll just go up on stage with the same mindset of winning that first game and getting two points on the board.
"I know he's obviously got the record and he knows how to beat me but hopefully I can try and get that win over him."
