Luke Littler certainly went through a rollercoaster of emotions when it came to his opening stint at the PDC World Darts Championship where he saw off Ryan Meikle.

He missed a nine-dart finish again on double 12, he hit a final set average of 141 a new record. But in the end, it all got on top of him. Footage went viral shared by The Sun of him crying walking off stage and embracing his family and he said it got a bit too much.

“That was probably the toughest game I’ve ever played, but you’ve got to get over the line," said an emotional Littler.

“I don’t know where I pulled that last set from, but I just had to fight until the end.

“When I got on that stage I felt really nervous, but I managed to find my game from somewhere.

“I know I am the favourite, but you have to focus on winning your first game, and that’s what I did tonight."

"I've done everything I could've done this year. Been really good but to win Young Sports Personality of the Year is a good achievement for myself."

He opened up on his emotional moment and said he wasn't expecting it and it all got a bit too much. "I drank my water, said to Abi (Davies) that I'm ok and then as soon as the questions come boom tears, I'm like what are you doing. The fans were really good then but it was a bit too much to try and speak on stage after that.

It has been a tournament that Littler has kept a beady eye on though with 'The Nuke' watching near enough every session thus far and will continue to do so.

"I've watched near enough every session. Missed the session Ryan played Fallon as I was at the Sports Personality. But I saw the result and knew I was playing Fallon. Other than that it was practice, watch darts and see who I was playing."

But he watched as Christian Kist hit a nine-dart finish and being one away from a record is certainly one to lament for him.

"It's definitely becoming a frustration. As soon as you make the switch to the treble 19, your eyes light up. I heard the camera pan round to the winner (of the money) so I'm sorry whoever you are. I'll try again."

But he also said that while he could be considered the best player in the world, it is not a title he wants to hand himself as such.

"You could probably say that but I'm just me, I'll never say I'm this and that I'm going to win all this, I just see where my darts land."
