“I’ve got absolutely nothing to lose and I’m ready for it” – Niko Springer targets upset win against Luke Littler

Niko Springer has booked his place in the second round of the Czech Darts Open in emphatic style. The German gave Martin Homola no chance in Prague, cruising into the next round with a clear 6–0. Waiting there is a blockbuster straight away: reigning world champion and world number one Luke Littler.

Springer impressed against Czech player Homola and did not drop a single leg. The 26-year-old German also produced at a high level, posting an average of over 102 points per three darts. It underlined that he is in excellent form and ready for another showdown with Littler.

This second-round match at the Czech Darts Open carries extra spice, as Springer and Littler have already met. The pair clashed at the World Matchplay, with the rematch following on Saturday. For Littler, it also marks his return to the European Tour stage, which instantly puts a big spotlight on the tie.

There is plenty on the line for Springer as well. The German is pushing hard to qualify for the World Grand Prix. The prestigious event in Leicester takes place later this month, and every win could be crucial in his bid to qualify for the first time. “I’m looking at the Race to the World Grand Prix right now, so every win is very important,” Springer explained after his dominant display.

That made the victory over Homola particularly valuable. Springer was never in trouble and could focus fully on getting the job done. “I think that’s why this win was especially important. I’m very happy and looking forward to tomorrow,” said the German.

Springer knows he will not start as favourite against Littler. The Englishman is world number one and was crowned world champion at the start of the year. Despite his young age, Littler already has vast big-stage experience.

Even so, Springer heads into round two with plenty of confidence. The German knows most of the pressure sits with his opponent and wants to make the most of it. “Honestly, I’ve got nothing to lose,” Springer said confidently. “I feel very secure. Of course it will be tough, but it’s best-of-11. So let’s go for it, I’m ready!”

That means Littler will be tested straight away on Saturday. Springer’s 102-plus average showed he can perform superbly, and he already knows Littler from their previous World Matchplay meeting.

For the German, it is also an excellent chance to make further ground in the race for a World Grand Prix spot. A win over Littler would not only be a major upset, it could be a key step towards his longed-for debut in Leicester.

Expectations for the tie are high. Springer has nothing to lose and appears to be playing with real belief. Littler, meanwhile, knows there is no room for lapses. The world champion returns to the European Tour, but immediately meets an opponent who has proved he can operate at top level.
