Damon Heta has qualified for the last sixteen of the 2024
World Series of Darts Finals. 'The Heat' needed a deciding leg against Gabriel Clemens, but eventually won 6-5 and now gets to face world number one Luke Humphries in round two.
Heta seemed to be in complete control of the match at 4-1, but saw his German opponent come back to 4-4. The next two legs were neatly divided, so an eleventh and deciding leg had to decide who could continue to the next round. In the end it was Heta who controlled his nerves best and walked away with the win.
"I was 4-1 up and he come back and he come back and I just said to myself: play simple darts," Heta reflected afterwards in conversation with
Online Darts. "I'm so excited just to get that win at five all, because I've lost a lot of 6-5's that I shouldn't have."
Heta has long been tipped as a future TV tournament winner. "It would be brilliant," says Heta of a potential title win in Amsterdam. "I mean, not everyone gets to win a TV tournament. But at this point in my career, four years since my first ranking title and I've collected a few more since then so I've done alright. I've just got to keep riding that wave, wherever it takes me."
At the last sixteen, the 37-year-old Australian will meet Luke Humphries, who won 6-3 over Haupai Puha in his opening match. "I'm going to prepare very well for that match. I'm satisfied that I already had to play my first match on Friday night, that way I have the whole day off tomorrow and I don't have to act until the evening session. Luke is obviously a great player, but I'm ready to make it an exciting match."
