Daryl Gurney made his return to the big stage in impressive fashion Friday night at the Baltic Sea Darts Open. The Northern Irishman began his campaign at the Wunderino Arena in Kiel with a convincing victory over Martin Lukeman.
It was Gurney's first individual appearance since his emotional victory last month at the World Cup of Darts, where he teamed with Josh Rock to capture the title by beating Wales in the final.
Against Lukeman, Gurney initially had a difficult start. He quickly looked at a 1-3 deficit. Yet 'Superchin' turned the tide with two fine 12-darters, after which he stylishly decided the match with an 11-darter.
"It was all about getting this first win and I'm happy with the performance and glad to be playing tomorrow," said Gurney, who now takes on Dave Chisnall.
Chisnall
A tough showdown with Dave Chisnall awaits in the second round. Gurney is looking forward to it, although he acknowledges that the pressure was quite intense after his triumph at the World Cup of Darts. "Coming away from the World Cup I've put myself under a bit of pressure, and I'm glad I got away with it. I started off very slowly and was 3-1 down so I'm very pleased to come through that game."
