Jack Main on juggling full-time work with darts: "How do you expect to live if you ain't got the money in the bank to pay the bills"

Jack Main became a PDC Tour Card holder at the turn of the year but combines his darting career with a full-time job.

Main is a brick layer by trade and spoke to The Darts Show on site for their latest episode about what he does and how he combines the two.

"My day job is obviously a brick layer now but I started off as a labourer. Literally worked my way up for the past seven years to actually start building houses. It's pretty hands on, on the go all the day do that five days a week and then come home and do my darts for the rest of the couple of hours I've got in a day," said Main.

Journey to darts

His journey began with football as an injury which effectively ended his career saw him pick up a set of darts and he also discussed how it is playing heroes on the ProTour.

"Played football all my life, it's kept me away from the streets. I actually signed for Norwich City, got released after two and a half years. My knee snapped in three places and that was kind of the end of my football career. Being bed bound at one point, I picked up a set of darts and started throwing."

"There's a quick journey to wanting to take it serious and try and make something from it. It's a bit daunting when you come up against the people you may have watched on the TV. Like I say I've played Peter Wright four times in 20 events. You don't have time for errors, you have to get the job done there and then."

Still working

Albeit a dying art with Jonny Clayton the highest profile player still to be working, Main spoke of it as a necessity due to working his way up the darting ladder and that it's all about affording the tournaments in the first place.

"At the bottom you're not earning the money and if you go away at the weekend and earn nothing then how are you expecting to carry on going down to the events if you can't afford the hotel. How do you expect to live if you ain't got the money in the bank to pay the bills."
