James Wade showed good performances in recent weeks with a final at the European Championship and a semifinal place at the Grand Slam of Darts, but 'The Machine' also started well at the
Players Championship Finals on Friday afternoon.
The eleven-time major winner easily handled William O'Connor (6-2) thanks to an average of 101.49. A 14-darter and a 70 finish gave him a 3-1 lead after four legs. The next two legs went with the darts, before Wade locked up the match with a 14-darter and a 13-darter.
Dimitri van den Bergh qualified for the second round in Minehead, following in the footsteps of compatriot Mario Vandenbogaerde. 'The Dreammaker' was actually the lesser scorer against Jim Williams, but was fortunate that the Welshman only went 4/21 on the doubles. The Belgian's finishes were a lot better at 6/16, making the 6-3 win a triumph for 'The Dreammaker'.
Gabriel Clemens did not let Connor Scutt, who handsomely made it to a Players Championship final earlier this year, shock him. After four legs Clemens led 3-1 after a 13-darter and a 14-darter. Scutt then managed to come back to 3-3, but then failed to keep his own leg in five innings. Clemens broke him with a 14-darter and eventually triumphed 6-3.
Jonny Clayton won in the final match of the afternoon on the main stage. The Welshman made it exciting after he squandered a 4-0 lead against Stephen Burton, but in the end 'The Ferret' pulled out the win 6-4.
