Luke Humphries has been a force to be reckoned with on the
European Tour in recent years. He secured a ninth title at the
Belgian Darts Open, defeating Jonny Clayton 8-6 in the final as he ascended to join a coveted group with
nine Euro Tour titles.
The world number two was not totally convincing at times when charging towards success in Wieze. He missed a whole heap of doubles in his quarterfinal clash against Chris Dobey, eventually stumbling over the line in a last-leg decider before racing away against Michael van Gerwen in the semi-finals while averaging over 105 to set up a contest against 'The Ferret.'
A blistering start saw Humphries accelerate away from the Premier League table topper. Clayton mounted a fightback and would not let Humphries win the easy way. In the end, it was 'Cool Hand Luke'
who managed to get over the line, relief pouring out at the end after coming through a stressful but successful evening to claim first silverware in Belgium.
Humphries up to second in Euro Tour titles
This title has placed Humphries on the cusp of double digits in Euro Tour titles. Only van Gerwen has completed that. The Dutchman will not be toppled at the top of the order for some time, maybe not ever. His 38 Euro Tour titles showcase the legend he is and the dominance he once had in the sport.
Gerwyn Price had the chance to confirm outright second place at the European Darts Trophy in Gottignen, Germany. His fine form saw him blast into the final but a stunning Wessel Nijman blew him away. He, as well as Humphries, has won nine Euro Tour titles.
Peter Wright is the only other player to amass that many triumphs. It is fair to say that tally may not be rising anytime soon unless he can spark back into life, finding his prior form to blast his way back to more success.
Dave Chisnall rounds off the top five with eight titles, six of which came between 2022 and 2024 in a golden patch for 'Chizzy.'
The next stop for the players in Europe is back in Germany for the German Darts Grand Prix held in Munich. Humphries was the champion back in 2024 after battering van Gerwen 8-1 in a ruthless final display. He will hope for more of the same with a 10th Euro Tour title on the cards.
