Kim Huybrechts recently showed his good heart. The Belgian darter supported 35-year-old Shana De Loose in her fight against metastatic bowel cancer with a benefit campaign.
The fight against cancer is something that touches Huybrechts personally, after all, a while back he lost his mother to this terrible disease.
"At one point the doctor called that she didn't have long to live, so then you feel the end approaching," Huybrechts told Het Nieuwsblad.
"You can still say anything you want at that point, but that person renounces pain in such a way... Just the very idea that you know you're going to die is the biggest mindfuck in the world. Seeing my mum suffer like that hit me extremely hard."
Annual market
Huybrechts, together with his wife Dana, has recently been running a darts shop in Nijlen.
"It is the first time we are participating with dartsshop in the annual fair here in Nijlen, so we had the idea of setting up a stall outside. We started brainstorming a bit and we ideally wanted to help someone in trouble. In doing so, my wife Dana came across Shana's story after doing some research, and for me that is a painful reminder of my mother. So I can imagine her situation very vividly. Not that my mum really had to take care of me like Shana took care of her young children, but I was also her handhold to keep fighting. And to survive difficult days, because it is really draining."
"I know perfectly well what kind of hell Shana is in at the moment," Huybrechts continued. "That has touched us and then we decided to donate the proceeds of our action to her, to make the pain a bit lighter after all. Taking it away completely is unfortunately not possible. I would immediately take away all the pain in the world if I could, but every little bit helps."
