Kirsi Viinikainen beats Fallon Sherrock to become first Nordic player ever to take title at PDC Women's Series

Kirsi Viinikainen has crowned herself the new winner at the PDC Women's Series. The Finnish player won the fifth event of the season Saturday afternoon and became the first Nordic winner of a Women's Series tournament.

Viinikainen was already enjoying a strong season at the Women's Series. In the first four tournaments, she already made it to two quarterfinals and a semifinal. So now came a first semifinal. In her first three matches, she conceded only three legs. She defeated Kacie O'Connor (4-0), Hilary Kirkbridge (4-1) and Aletta Wajer (4-2) for a spot in the last eight.

The 52-year-old player then saw off Robyn Byrne (5-4) and Eleanor Cairns (5-3) for a spot in the final. Fallon Sherrock was her opponent in the final after 'Queen of the Palace' defeated Rhian O'Sullivan (5-1) and Lisa Ashton (5-3), among others. Sherrock, however, had to face Viinikainen in the final 5-2. Earlier in the tournament, Beau Greaves was surprisingly eliminated at the last 64 by Katie Sheldon.

If there are at least 128 players competing, prizes for the PDC Women's Series will be awarded from the last 64, with fifty pounds for reaching this round. If there are fewer than 128 players, the counter only starts running from the last 32. In that case, they do collect one hundred pounds.

This amount eventually keeps rising. A final place is already guaranteed to earn £1,000. The winner of the tournament will receive £2,000 in prize money. The number one on the Women's Series Order of Merit gets to compete in the Grand Slam of Darts at the end of the year and the top two receive a starting ticket to the Darts World Cup.
